Does Instagram Allow AI Videos? How to Add the AI Label
Yes. Instagram allows AI videos. Meta requires you to label “photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that has been digitally generated or altered”, and warns that “there may be penalties” if you do not. A song made with AI-generated vocals is one of Meta’s own examples, so an AI rap video of you and a friend needs the label.
You turn it on with the Add AI label toggle when you share a Reel or a post; Stories have it under Options. Meta does not require a label on AI images, and a cartoon-style video does not need one. Details below, from Meta’s help pages read on 19 October 2026.

What Meta asks you to label
- A realistic-looking video of people, Meta’s example being a crowd at an outdoor market.
- A song made with AI-generated vocals.
- A reel narrated by a realistic AI voice.
Not required: AI images (Meta may label them anyway when it detects AI) and clearly cartoon-style video. A Hotel Lobby Video clip is realistic video with AI-made vocals, so it falls on the “label it” side.
When Instagram labels it for you
Meta reads industry-standard signals that some AI tools write into their files and can add an AI info label on its own. It also says that not every AI file carries such a signal. We have not checked whether our MP4s carry one, so do not count on an automatic label. Meta explains the approach in its Transparency Center.
A Reel-ready checklist
- Use photos of people who agreed to be in it, and keep anyone under 18 out of public posts.
- Pick 9:16 under Video settings, so the clip fills the Reels screen.
- Download the MP4 and share it from your phone’s gallery.
- Switch on Add AI label before you share.
The TikTok side of the same question is in does TikTok allow AI videos? The two rules agree on the main point: realistic AI people get a label.
